John Hardy was a young Canadian designer, that visited the island of Bali on vacation in 1975. He was fascinated by the island’s traditional jewelry craft, and later added his own design elements to traditional Balinese techniques. He studied with a master Balinese artisan, whose ancestors designed jewelry pieces for the royal court
He formed John Hardy Jewelry in 1989, and later added other design elements from Europe and abroad to these traditional, organic, island pieces. They were bold and quite popular, and in the early 90’s his jewelry were being sold in retail locations such as Neiman Marcus, and Saks 5th Avenue. In 2003, Damien Dernoncourt became president of the company, and his designs began to be sold internationally.
